Maine Grown Energy:
Last year, Maine had the highest hike in energy prices in the Nation. We need common-sense solutions. As Senator, I would prioritize securing Federal funding to grow our biomass energy production capabilities in Maine at our few remaining paper mills. Doing so would stabilize electricity prices statewide, provide high-quality jobs in rural Maine, and give paper mills a much-needed additional revenue source.
- Add 200MW of biomass energy production capacity to operational paper mills in Maine
- Fueled by biomass produced by an increase in lumber production from 400 million board feet/year to 1 billion board feet.
- Provides much-needed additional revenue for paper mills
- 200MW of energy production = 1.3TWh/Year = 130$ Million Revenue @ .10/kwh
- Stabilize energy prices Statewide
- Creates 100’s of new jobs at our few remaining paper mills
- Reduce our dependence on expensive natural gas by 20-25%
- Adds reliable, carbon-neutral energy production capacity in Maine
- Redirects >20$ Million in fuel costs that would be spent instead on sustainably harvesting & transporting Maine lumber & slash/logging residue.
- Creates 100’s of new forestry-related jobs in Northern & Western Maine
